Reference Marien-Hospital Erwitte - Securing the Future and Developing a Strategy

Initial Situation and Project Goals
Rising costs, shrinking revenues and rapidly dropping patient numbers are a short description the situation the Marien-Hospital was in at the beginning of the project. The local population and referring doctors stood by “their hospital”, but when in doubt still failed to opt for the Marien-Hospital. Its financial situation thereby started to threaten its future. What was needed was to evaluate the current situation, trace out realistically what the future held in store and immediately implement measures to avoid this future. The Marien-Hospital Erwitte is a member of the St. Nikolaus Association of Catholic Hospitals, to which the Dreifaltigkeits Hospital in Lippstadt and the Hospital zum Heiligen Geist in Geseke also belong.

“Thanks to the careful analysis and first-class strategic courses of action identified by UNITY the situation could be stabilized and new prospects could be developed and utilized. This enabled us to fend of the threatened closure. We are now confidently heading into our new future.”

Mayor Wolfgang Fahle, Erwitte

Tasks of UNITY

Starting with a thorough analysis of the initial situation, the possible options were identified, evaluated and matched with concrete measures. Immediate measures had to be taken to stabilize the situation, then strategic options had to be agreed upon and implemented in cooperation with the St. Nikolaus Association of Catholic Hospitals. In the foreground of this stood the consolidation of the spectrum of medical services and the need to establish cooperation across the Association. This was accompanied by comprehensive liquidity management. Combined with a detailed business plan to evaluate the short-, mid- and long-term measures, this made possible a secure basis for making decisions regarding the stabilization and financing of the Marien-Hospital. Professional clinic management to implement the strategy that was developed, paired with the clinic’s unique selling propositions, are putting it back on the path to success.

Benefits for the Client

The results of the project demonstrate both the financial development of and the actual improvements to the clinic:

  • The consolidation of the spectrum of services both on site and across the Association
  • Measures to take in more patients and realize the full medical potential of the clinic
  • Measures for increasing profitability
  • Development of a robust business strategy

With this project the Marien-Hospital could avoid the closure that threatened it and instead bring about solid future prospects within the Association of Catholic Hospitals St. Nikolaus.
